SLIAC Game of the Week: Greenville at Westminster

This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is between Greenville College and Westminster College, two teams coming in with winning streaks and looking to secure their position in the conference standings. Greenville College "PANTHERS"

Greenville College is currently 11-6 overall and 6-3 in the SLIAC. They are tied for second place in the SLIAC standings and have won two straight games. The Panthers are third in the SLIAC in scoring at 73.2 points per game and are the top shooting team with a 45.7 field goal percentage.

Junior Laura Goodnight is the go to player, averaging team highs in both scoring (13.2 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg). Sophomore Wesley Woodard is second on the team at 11.7 points per game and is the top shooter in the league at 55-percent. Senior Taylor Paulin is coming off a big week for the Panthers, averaging 18.0 points in two games including a 21 point effort, and is averaging 9.2 points per game this season.

 

Westminster College "BLUE JAYS"

Westminster College is 7-9 overall and sit in fourth place in the standings with a 5-3 mark. The Blue Jays are on a two game winning streak and have won four of their last five games. The Blue Jays tend to work the ball inside, where they are averaging a league leading 15.6 free-throws made per game.

Senior Andrea Zalis is an all-around player; averaging 17.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. Zalis is the team's top outside threat, hitting 35-percent of her three-point shots this season and leading the conference with 45 made three's. Sophomore Mirrakohl Johnson is an inside force averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, including 3.7 offensive rebounds per game. Sophomore Kelsey Ray is averaging 6.4 points and a team high 3.1 assists per game.

 

Previous Meeting - BOX SCORE

Greenville defeated Westminster 81-62 earlier this season, giving them two straight wins in the all-time series. Greenville jumped out to a 26-12 lead after the first quarter and put up at least 20 points in three of the four quarters in the game. The Panthers forced 21 turnovers and held Westminster to just 36-percent shooting in the game. Laura Goodnight led Greenville with 22 points while Andrea Zalis paced Westminster with 24 points.

Game Notes

  • The all-time series between Greenville and Westminster has the Blue Jays on top 24-22 but has seen the Panthers win each of the last two meetings including one earlier this season.
  • Westminster's Andrea Zalis has scored in double figures in all but one game this season and has five 20 point games including a career high 35 points, which set a program single game record.
  • The last time Greenville visited Westminster was in the 2016 SLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament Championship Game, where the Panthers won 66-63.
  • Westminster is looking to extend their active SLIAC tournament appearance streak to nine seasons.
  • Greenville's Taylor Paulin is the reigning SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week. She joins teammate Laura Goodnight in receiving the honor this year. It marked the first time a Greenville player has been named Player of the Week since the 2008-09 season when Meredith Banal won in the season's opening week.
